Often when you are fully involved with an activity, you lose track of what you’ve accomplished. Too often we focus on the frustrations of what didn’t get done right. We make “perfect” the enemy of “good”. Well Algoma, in 2016 you’ve done well in making us a healthier, more vibrant community. We are doing good things to improve the health and well-being of our community. Normally, we don’t post presentations, but this was too “perfect” a way to catch you up, and remind you of what this is all about. We have committed to improving at least one dimension of health and well-being in our lives. The dimensions of improvement include the following:
Physical – includes diet and exercise efforts. It also includes disease prevention and compliance with treatment regimens for injury and disease processes.
Financial – focuses on keeping the stresses of financial difficulties to a point where it is not impacting our health or sense of well being. Financial planning, debt management, smart financing are all part of this dimension.
Emotional – how we deal with what life throws at us can dramatically change our health and well-being. We learn about different strategies to recognize the need for help and employ techniques to better deal with our reactions to anxiety, depression, stress, grief, loss and other set backs we may or may not experience.
Spiritual – a relationship with a higher power, or generative leader, is bedrock for many people’s well-being. It maintains and sustains us through good and bad times.
Intellectual – active intellectual pursuit maintains our mental alertness and brain health. Life long learning keeps us informed, involved and engaged.
Social – isolation is deadly. We need each other to interact with and reinforce what it means to be human.
Environmental – We only get one world. We should make sure we treat it
with respect in order to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the dwellings we live.
So check out the slides and consider the efforts we have made to make Algoma a place that values health and well-being for everyone. Note the contributions of our youngest citizens in making us better. Their ideas, their energies, their perseverance and their successes have made a difference. Enjoy the slides.
